First Class Prep

So, first things first, what are we packing? You might dress a little differently to your usual pole classes but, then again, you may not! If you are going to an ooey gooey choreo class, you might like to where something more flowy than tricks classes allow for. Or you could dress up to the nines for a stripper style choreo. Some classes allow for a relaxed uniform of sweats and a sports bra. It’s up to you, but if in doubt if what your wearing will be appropriate make sure to get in touch with your instructor or studio to double check, they will be happy to help.

Everybody’s favourite question – what shoes are we wearing? Some choreo classes will
happily be adapted for a bare tootsie, but some are only possible in Pleasers so make sure to do your research. For a more in-depth guide on shopping your first pair of pole heels, check out our style breakdown here! From boot vs sandal to platform height, fit and support, everything you need to know before you take your first step.

If you are wearing heels, it’s a good idea to brush up on your heels technique. This can make all the difference to a performance, and make sure you are dancing safely. Try out a class that specialises in heel technique to really take your dancing to the next level.

Finally, make sure to pack grip if it’s something you use. There can be a false perception that flow classes are the ‘easy’ choice but believe me they can make you sweat! From sweaty palms, to drier skin, we've got the widest range of pole grips to choose from, so you can treat your skin with a solution that’s tailored to your needs.

Secrets to Success

As we say, like any pole class, flow and choreo can be challenging. There is a cardio element to this style of dancing that you may not be used to in tricks classes and wearing heels can be tiring. So, don’t treat choreo as a rest day! Make sure you arrive well fuelled, hydrated, and rested.

As well as being physically tiring, learning choreo can be a mental challenge too. You will belearning a new skill, retaining choreography as well as focusing on execution, timing, and style. Our best advice is don’t be afraid to speak up! Your instructor wants you to get the most out of your class and will be happy to help. Make sure to ask questions!

Feeling the Flow

One of the most intimidating but rewarding aspects of poling can be freestyle choreography. Once you have got to grips with the basics, spending time freestyling using the moves you have learnt in class can be the best way to develop your own style of dance, as well as learn how to really embody your movements. Experiment with different music, see what makes you feel the flow, and just dance! Don’t worry if it feels a little awkward or silly at first, freestyling can often be a fake it ‘till you make it kind of activity. Just give it a go, have fun and if you miss a beat, who cares!

Get Inspired

Finally, it can be so helpful and inspiring to see how other dancers are moving! Here are some ideas for some different polers to get inspired by:
